Slewing drives typically use spur or worm gears to achieve rotation. Spur gear drives achieve high rpm and rapid acceleration at nominal to low torque loads. On the other hand, Worm gear drives are slower but can amplify input torque at a much higher ratio than a typical spur gear system. Therefore, worm drives are used in applications that require high torque.
Compared to other gearbox solutions, slewing drives are compact and have a high power density, making them the preferred solution for space-saving applications such as robotics, automation, etc. The relationship between load-carrying capacity and geometric dimensions is primarily influenced by design. Single-row raceways occupy the lower region of the performance curve, while double-row and cross-roller raceways provide significantly higher performance. Gear design is critical as this affects torque carrying capacity and the smoothness of operation and rotation of the drive.
The best swing drive systems have an enclosure that encloses the system and provides protection from environmental elements. As a result, slewing drives can be used in applications where the components are fully exposed without any damage or corrosion to the internal parts. Encapsulated units also extend operating life by limiting bearing lubrication losses, significantly reducing maintenance costs. Slewing drives can be successfully designed to operate in extremely harsh conditions such as salt spray conditions (ocean cranes), explosion-proof conditions (paint booths), mining, food and beverage, and sub-zero cold and arctic conditions.

Check the Slew Drive
When disassembling the slew drive, the outer ring of the slew drive should be connected with the upper carriage, and the inner circle should be combined with the lower vehicle. The sealing ring on the slew drive should be cleaned and put in place. The suitable crane should separate the equipment, and the screws and bolts on the slew drive should be removed. Cover the steel ball and isolation sleeve completely, and check the steel ball and isolation sleeve. To prevent the steel ball, clean it and put it in the sunlight to see whether there are pits or pits on the steel ball. If there is a crack or damage on the isolation sleeve, it is necessary to replace it in time.
Maintenance and Inspection of Slewing Drive
The slew drive raceway should be filled with grease regularly. Generally, ball bearings should be oiled every 100 hours, and roller bearings should be lubricated every 50 hours. The lubrication cycle should be shortened in a unique working environment, such as tropical, humidity, dust, temperature difference, and continuous operation. The machine must also be filled with new grease before and after a long-term shutdown. The raceway must be filled with grease every time until it seeps from the sealing belt. Rotate the slew drive slowly to fill the grease evenly when filling grease.
The tooth surface should always be cleaned of debris and coated with the corresponding grease. After the first 100 hours of operation of the slew drive, the bolt preload should be checked, and then it should be checked every 500 hours. Sufficient preload must be maintained. Pay attention to the operation of the slew drive during use. In case of noise, impact, and sudden power increase, the machine should be shut down immediately for inspection and troubleshooting. If necessary, it should be disassembled for inspection. It is forbidden to wash the slew drive directly with water to prevent ice and snow from entering the raceway. Strictly control challenging foreign matters from approaching or entering the gear meshing area. Check the sealing condition regularly. If the sealing bag is damaged, it should be replaced in time. If it is found to fall off, it should be reset in time.

FAQ About Slew Drives
1. What is the prime mover for slew drive?
A: An electric or hydraulic motor is the prime mover for slew drive.
2. Does slew drive requires a brake or not?
A: Depends upon the requirement and application.
3: Where is slew drive used?
A: Slew drive is used for any machine having turning movement. Usually, it is used with slew bearings with internal or external teeth, and the gearbox has a pinion on the output shaft that drives the big gear of the slew bearing.
4. What type of gearbox is used in slew drive?
A: Planetary gearbox is used in slew drive.
5: What kind of braking arrangement is provided for slew drive?
A: Normally, slew drives are electric or hydraulic. The electric type has got shoe type brake or Negative electromagnetic brake on the motor. At the same time, the hydraulic type has got a multidisc hydraulic brake.
6. What type of bearings are used in this slew drive?
A: Spherical or roller bearings are usually used in the slew gearbox output shafts to take care of high radial loading.
7. Which type of pinion is used in the slew drive?
A: Normally, the slew drive has a pinion with a corrected profile to ensure a complete contact pattern with bearing gear.
8. How is backlash adjusted in slew drive?
A: To adjust the backlash between the pinion and slew gear, the gearbox’s mounting is slightly eccentric to adjust the backlash precisely.
9. Slew drive is used for which applications?
A: Slew drive is used for stacker, ash handling reclaimer, windmill, tower cranes, and excavators.
